Region Hosts National Refuge Law Enforcement Workshop
Southeast Region, December 12, 2003
Print Friendly Version
The Southeast Region hosted the first ever National Refuge Law Enforcement Zone System Workshop December 8 - 12. The workshop provided mandatory training and orientation for the 23 zone officers hired nationwide under the new Refuge Law Enforcement Zone System, which was implemented at the end of FY 2003. Under the new system, each region has been geographically divided into law enforcement zones. Each zone officer coordinates with the refuge managers within the zone and provides law enforcement oversight for policy implementation and consistency. Among the participants were the Assistant Director, Department of the Interior, Office of Law Enforcement and Safety Kim Thorsen, Assistant Director for the Office of Law Enforcement Kevin Adams, and the Chief Bill Hartwig and Deputy Chief Jim Kurth of the National Wildlife Refuge System. The Southeast Region has the largest refuge law enforcement program in the country, and currently has seven of its 14 zone officer positions filled.
