Technical Assistance to Country of Georgia

Division of Conservation Planning & Policy Deputy Chief Barry W. Stieglitz recently returned from an Interior Technical Assistance Program (ITAP) mission to the former Soviet republic of Georgia. The ITAP Team was charged with assisting the Georgia State Department of Protected Areas 1) implement management plans for three national parks, and 2) re-organize based upon recent legislations and to prepare for future challenges. Stieglitz led the latter, Institutional Development, subteam, and conducted a 3 1/2-day workshop through translators with about 30 protected areas personnel from both the Central Office and field staff, as well as representatives from NGOs and other central office governments. The Team submitted products including proposed organization charts, standard position descriptions, management plan projects and budgets, and recommendations to improve operations, including creating a vision or mission statement, agency uniforms and logo, and competency model. The Team will likely return to Georgia in the spring or summer of 2004 to complete this mission.

This accomplishment benefits conservation of international ecosystems through the protection of biodiversity and cultural resources.
