  • Lassen National Forest Celebrates Wildflower Week

    Blooming wildflowers are a sure sign that spring is finally here. The Lassen National Forest is “Celebrating Wildflowers� the week of May 18 through May 22. In honor of this special week, the Forest Service is promoting the importance of native plant conservation with an emphasis on the beauty and value of wildflowers. Celebrating Wildflowers also highlights how the nation’s forests and millions of acres of public lands are America’s wildflower gardens. Kirsten Bovee, Assistant Forest Botanist, will lead a Wildflower Walk along the Bizz Johnson Trail on Thursday, May 21 at 5:00 p.m. This walk will showcase local wildflowers and plants, as well as educate residents about plant conservation. The walk will begin at the Hobo Camp parking area.
  • BURN PERMITS REQUIRED MAY 1ST 2009

    Effective Friday May 1st, 2009 at 12:00 a.m. the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Lassen – Modoc – Plumas Unit has announced the requirements of dooryard burn permits for residential burning within Lassen, Modoc and Plumas Counties Burning permits are required from May 1st, 2009 to Midnight June 30th, 2009 (July 1, 2009) for all residential burning on State Responsibility Area Lands.
  • Campsites Are a Sure Catch in Lassen National Forest

    The Lassen National Forest will soon open over 350 camping sites near prime fishing waters in support of the 2009 Fishing Season. Lassen National Forest personnel have prepared campgrounds for anglers and spring campers along Deer Creek and Hat Creek. Forest Service Officials project there will be more than enough camping sites available to meet the anticipated demand by the April 25 opening day of trout season.
  • Lassen County Resource Advisory Committee Meeting 8:00am May 7th

    The Lassen County Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) will be meeting at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 6th to receive an update on the changes to legislation, discuss the schedule for the seventh round of grant funding and other committee business. The rest of the day will de dedicated to hearing presentations from project proponents. Depending on Wednesday meeting outcomes, they may continue on Thursday May 7th. The meetings will be held at the Lassen National Forest Supervisor’s Office 2550 Riverside Drive, Susanville, CA. The RAC is a function of the Secure Rural Schools and Self Determination Act of 2000, commonly known as Payments to States. Meetings are open to the public and time will be set aside for public comments.   • Partnerships Contribute to Improvements at Eagle Lake Gallatin Marina

    Are you ready to enjoy the great outdoors? The Lassen National Forest announces that the beginning of the fishing season is just around the corner. The Forest would like to remind boaters to be safe and considerate of other water users. Remember to be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. Eagle Lake is as inviting as ever, with lots of migrating water fowl, spring flowers and great camping and fishing opportunities.

  • Lassen NF OHV Grants Proposals Available for Review and Comment

    Each year, the Lassen National Forest has an opportunity to submit grant applications to the California State Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division (OHMVR) for their consideration for funding in support of the Forest’s on-going Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) program. The Division is currently soliciting proposals for the 2009 grant cycle and the Lassen National Forest is considering three projects for submission. One project would assist the forest with ground operations and maintenance, the second application would enable the forest to plan for future OHV area management, and the third would assist with OHV area patrols and law enforcement.
  • Lassen National Forest Hosting Educational Snowshoe Walks

    Chester, CA…There is nothing like spending time outside during the winter to breathe in the crisp air and enjoy the winter wonderland on snow shoes. The Almanor Ranger District is planning to conduct their last winter snowshoe walk and education program Friday March 20. The walk will last from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. will cover one to two miles and is open to adults and children eight years and older. Pre-registration for the walk is required. For those who find the idea of snowshoeing intriguing and wish to try it out, contact Barbara Jackson at the Almanor Ranger District at (530) 258-2141 for more information.

    Susanville, CA…The National Museum of Forest Service History is a private non-profit 501C.3 Corporation and is looking for members from the Forest Service employee community. Members can be retirees, current and past employees. Joining the National Museum of Forest Service History will help support the mission to better preserve the record and learn from the past to help build our future conservation history.
  • WET CONDITIONS AND SNOW BRINGS TEMPORARY CLOSURE TO FUELWOOD CUTTING

    With the recent wet weather and deep snow levels, Eagle Lake District Ranger Theresa Frolli, has announced the temporary closure of fuelwood cutting on the Eagle Lake Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest. The closure affects Zone V located on the fuelwood cutting map, which accompanies fuelwood permits and can be referred to condition D.1 under permit requirements. The closure will be in effect beginning Wednesday, January 14th.

    There is nothing like spending time outside during the winter to breathe in the crisp air and enjoy the winter wonderland on snow shoes. The Eagle Lake Ranger District will begin their winter snowshoe walk and education programs in January. “This is a great opportunity for people to try a new activity and learn more about the forest and wildlife in winter,� said Jill Poulsen of the Eagle Lake Ranger District.

    Crisp sunny winter days for many are an invitation to enjoy and play in the outdoors. While there are several outdoor winter activities, snowshoeing is one that people of all ages can enjoy. Join the Almanor Ranger District this winter to observe the beautiful mountain landscapes, and learn about “Winter Survival�, “Trees and Wintering Animals of the Lassen National Forest�, “Ravens in winter�, and winter safety while walking on snowshoes.
  • Lassen National Forest Snowmobile Route Restrictions Begin December 26

    Lassen National Forest snowmobile routes are closed to all wheeled vehicles including All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) until March 31, 2009. Lassen National Forest has six major designated snowmobile areas with 477 miles of groomed trails on the Forest. According to Michael Zunino Patrol Captain for the Lassen, “We are concerned about resource protection and visitor safety.� “Wheeled vehicles create ruts on groomed trails which result in hazardous conditions for snowmobilers.
