Frequently Asked Questions

How may I obtain a map of your (or other) National Forest?

Maps are available for purchase at the Forest Headquarters, District Offices and our two visitor centers, Wheeler Gorge and Big Sur Multi-Agency Facility. Check out the Map and Brochure page for information on how to obtain one by mail.

Where may I obtain an Interagency Access Pass?

The Information Center or most National Forest Offices. Check out the Passes page for more information.

Where may I obtain a California Campfire permit?

Permits are available at all of the District Offices and the Forest Headquarters. Permits are free of charge. Many Field Rangers carry permit books. Check out the Campfire Permit page for more information.

Can I Camp Outside a Designated Campground?

Camping is allowed outside of designated campgrounds in some areas. For more information, please contact the Ranger Station or Visitor Center nearest your destination.

For areas where dispersed camping is allowed, you need to obtain a California Campfire Permit for the use of any open flame (including gas stoves, lanterns, wood fires, charcoal fires or smoking). These permits can be obtained at no cost from any Los Padres National Forest Ranger Station or Visitor Center. Open flame of any kind may be restricted during times of high fire danger; check with the local Forest Service office for current restrictions.

I have a problem or question about a tree on my property. Can someone help me?

The US Forest Service does not provide this service, but many State Foresters do. Contact your State Forester to see if they provide this service. You can find your State Forester online.

Are there contracts on which I can bid to do work for the Forest Service?

To bid on contracts throughout the federal government, start at FedBizOpps or Solicitations specific to Forest Service.

How do I get Smokey Bear to appear to my classroom or at my event?

Contact your local Ranger District Office; ask to speak to the person in charge of Fire Prevention.
