Abstract A method of estimating the hydroelastic response of a very large pontoon type floating structure has been developed. To obtain the hydrodynamic forces, the pressure distribution method with shallow draft assumption was used, considering the elastic motion of a floating body. The elastic response of a very large floating structure was estimated using the modal analysis of a 2-D beam model. To observe the elastic response of a large pontoon type structure, experiments were carried out in head sea and head+beam sea conditions. The experimental model was a pontoon type large elastic floating body consisting of many box type rigid floats connected by longitudinal and lateral elastic beams. An optical image processing system was used to measure vertical motions of multiple points of the elastic model, elastic motions and deformation of the model in 2-directional waves could be measured. The numerical results were compared with the experimental results and good agreement was found.
