Abstract This paper proposes an autonomous decentralized synchronization system for inter-vehicle communication network (IVCN). Two considerations regarding IVCN features are: "time variant" on the number and location of vehicles and fading channel in IVCN different from other decentralized synchronization systems, and the fixed base-to-base station synchronization system proposed for personal handy phone system (PHPS). The proposed system includes a high speed algorithm, a protocol for a newly coming subscriber in IVCN, and a utilization of spread spectrum ranging for reducing the frame timing error. Computer simulations assess the performance of the system under highway conditions. It is shown that flexible synchronization can be carried out in the autonomous decentralized system in IVCN.
