  Overview
Valley City Wetland Management District
Valley City Wetland Management District (WMD) is one of 11 WMDs found in North Dakota's famed "duck factory" country, the Prairie Pothole Region.

Valley City WMD is located in east-central North Dakota and includes Cass, Traill, Barnes, Griggs, and Steele counties. It consists of 82 Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA) totaling approximately 17,000 acres. There are also 55,400 acres protected by wetland easements, and four easement national wildlife refuges that total 5,500 acres.

Getting There . . .
The District headquarters is located 2 miles northwest of Valley City along the Sheyenne River. From Interstate 94, take Valley City exit #292 to the north. You will be on 8th Avenue. Managment Activities

Waterfowl Production Areas are small tracts of land made up of wetland and upland areas. WPAs are managed to preserve wetland habitat, increase waterfowl production, sustain native wildlife, and benefit the public using these areas. District staff manages WPAs using a variety of methods, including prescribed fire, haying, grazing, and farming. Noxious weeds, mainly leafy spurge and Canada thistle, are controlled using both pesticides and biological control agents. WPAs in the Valley City WMD that did not have native tallgrass prairie vegetation have been planted to either dense nesting cover (a mix of wheatgrass, alfalfa, and sweetclover) or re-seeded with a native grass mixture.
