Hunting

 

Popular game animals include mule deer, mountain and valley quail, and turkey. Waterfowl can be hunted on Baldwin Lake in Big Bear and Lake Hemet in San Jacinto. Band-tailed pigeons, cottontail rabbits, jackrabbits, and black bears can also be hunted.

 

Important Hunting Information and Tips

  • All hunting is regulated by the California Department of Fish and Game (909) 484-0167 and a license is required.
     
  • Target shooting is restricted to designated sites and sites operated under permit only
     
  • Due to the number of cities and communities in and near the National Forest and to prevent wildfires in the forest, discharging a firearm with steel core, armor piercing or Teflon ammunition is not permitted.
     
  • Know current forest use and fire restrictions
     
  • Use of campground fire rings may be restricted, based on seasonal fire use restrictions & guidelines Wood and charcoal fires are never permitted outside of developed sites (campgrounds, picnic areas or yellow post sites)
     
  • Always bring drinking water and propane stove for cooking. (if permitted)
     
  • Federal laws strictly prohibit the discharge of firearms within 150 yards of a developed campground or occupied area.
     
  • Use the correct ammunition, steel core, armor piercing or Teflon ammunition is not permitted.
     
  • ATV's / UTV's and non-California street legal vehicles normally cannot be operated in or around campgrounds, check before you go. 
     
  • Weapons laws applicable to street legal vehicles also apply to non-street legal vehicles
     
  • All vehicles must remain on designated routes. 
     
  • You cannot use your vehicle to drive off designated routes for the purpose of retrieving game taken.
     
  • Respect private property and do not trespass, and hunt at least 150 yards (300 feet) from of a residence, building; campsite, developed recreation site, or occupied area. across or on a road or body of water; in any circumstance whereby any person may be injured or property damaged.
     
  • Remember the forest is used by many Recreation users, be aware of hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers and operators of OHV's.
     
  • Remember to carry maps, cell phone, flashlight and GPS, let someone know where you went and when you plan to return.  Did you remember extra batteries?

As seasonal fire danger increases throughout the year, we may need to restrict public access to parts of the forest based on local factors such as weather, fuel conditions and the fire situation throughout California. Big Bear Lake Area


Juniper Springs Group Campground: You must have reservations for use of this campground. Reservations are available from May 1 – November 30 by contacting the National Reservation Service at 1-877-444-6777 or www.reserveamerica.com. This group campground accommodates a maximum of 40 people and 8 vehicles. Camping fees are $60/night plus the reservation fee. Amenities include fire rings, picnic tables, trashcans and vault toilet. Water is not potable and must be filtered.

Greenspot Equestrian Group Campground: You must have reservations for use of this campground. Reservations are available from May 1 – October 31 by contacting the National Reservation Service at 1-877-444-6777 or www.reserveamerica.com. This group campground accommodates a maximum of 25 people, 8 vehicles and 10 horses. Amenities include stock water (not potable), fire rings, picnic tables, corrals, trashcans and vault toilet. Camping fees are $50.00 per night plus reservation fee.

Holcomb Valley Family Campground: There are 19 single-family campsites available year round on a first-come-first-serve basis (no reservations). Each family campsite accommodates a maximum of 8 people and 2 vehicles per campsite. Amenities include fire rings, picnic tables, trashcans and vault toilets. Camping fees are $12 per night per site.

Horse Springs Family Campground: There are 11 single-family campsites available year round on a first-come-first-serve basis (no reservations). Each family campsite accommodates a maximum of 8 people and 2 vehicles per campsite. Amenities include fire rings, picnic tables, trashcans and vault toilets. Camping fees are $10 per night per site (starting 9/1/05).

Lake Arrowhead Area


Fisherman’s Group Campground: You must have reservations for use of this campground. Reservations are available from May 1 – November 30 by contacting the National Reservation Service at 1-877-444-6777 or www.reserveamerica.com. There are 4 separate group campsites with a maximum occupancy of 8 people per campsite. This is a hike-in campground (2.5 miles) and is located in a remote area along lower Deep Creek. Amenities include fire rings, picnic tables and a vault toilet. Camping fees are $10.00 per night per group campsite plus reservation fee.

Crab Flats Family Campground: There are 29 single-family campsites available year round on a first-come-first-serve basis (no reservations). Each family campsite accommodates a maximum of 8 people and 2 vehicles per campsite. Amenities include fire rings, picnic tables, trashcans and vault toilets. Camping fees are $16 per night per site.
