Maps and Incentive Sheets
Google Earth
The information contained in these maps is also available via an Renewable Energy Interactive Mapping Tool. To use this tool:
- First, make sure you have Google Earth loaded onto your computer. You can download Google Earth for free online.
- Second, open the Renewable Energy Interactive Map (KMZ, 1.2 MB) to launch the Renewable Energy Maps and associated site information.
- Third, make sure to check the box next to "RE_on_EPA_Tracked_Sites" in Google Earth's left navigation panel. Doing so will add a new layer of dots to the Google Earth map.
The maps and incentive sheets on this page were developed by EPA in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and provide information about opportunities for renewable energy generation on contaminated lands and minings sites in all 50 states. This page covers potential for six types of renewable energy:
- Community wind energy - Wind energy potential with wind power class of 3 or greater.
- Utility scale wind energy - Wind energy potential with wind power class of 4 or greater.
- Utility scale Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) - Direct normal resource availability of 6 kWh/m2/day or greater.
- Utility scale Photovoltaic solar energy (PV) - Direct normal resource availability of 5 kWh/m2/day or greater.
- Biopower facility - Cumulative biomass resources of 140,000 metric tons/year or greater within 50 miles.
- Biorefinery facility - Cumulative crop residues of 333,000 metric tons/year or greater within 50 miles.
EPA OSWER Center for Program Analysis Data Guidelines for "Clean and Renewable Energy Generation Potential on EPA Tracked Sites" Maps (PDF) (7pp, 115KB, About PDF) - This document outlines the renewable energy mapping methodology, data considerations, data sources and attributes, and contact information.
Maps for these six types of energy, as well as non-grid connected wind and photovoltaic solar energy, for the entire nation are also available:
- EPA Tracked Sites with Utility Scale Wind Energy Generation Potential
- EPA Tracked Sites with Community Wind Energy Generation Potential
- EPA Tracked Sites with Utility Scale Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Energy Generation Potential
- EPA Tracked Sites with Utility Scale Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Energy Generation Potential
- EPA Tracked Sites with Biopower Facility Siting Potential
- EPA Tracked Sites with Biorefinery Facility Siting Potential
- EPA Tracked Sites with Non-Grid Connected Wind Energy Generation Potential
- EPA Tracked Sites with Non-Grid Connected Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Energy Generation Potential
You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view some of the files on this page. See EPA's PDF page to learn more about PDF, and for a link to the free Acrobat Reader.
The table below contains maps showing the locations of opportunities for renewable energy generation on contaminated lands and mining sites in all 50 states. The incentive sheets contain information about federal (PDF) and state incentives that are available for renewable energy generation and contaminated land redevelopment in each state.
The data shown in the maps in this table can be found in this Mapping Data Excel File (7.9 MB).
Each incentive sheet in the table below is in PDF format, 2pp, about 500K -2 MB.
Each map in the table below is in PDF format, 1pg, about 650K.
