Do you enjoy recreating at developed recreation sites on the Siuslaw National Forest?

The Forest recently completed a review and analysis of all its developed recreation sites as part of a nationwide effort called Recreation Facilities Analysis (RFA). The intent of RFA is to prioritize work and better align Forest Service developed recreation facilities with public demand, as well as budget and staffing capabilities. The draft results of the Siuslaw effort are presented below. Please take a few moments to review the draft and provide any comments you wish.

Many of the developed recreation sites on the Siuslaw are at least 50 years old and in need of significant repair or restoration. At the same time, public tastes and preferences for outdoor recreation have changed over the years and some facilities no longer meet visitor needs or projected future-visitor demands.

Under the RFA process, the Siuslaw made an initial assessment of its 84 developed recreation sites with an eye to ensuring that: the sites compliment the unique outdoor recreation settings and opportunities that the Forest has to offer (the Siuslaw niche); the sites meet current visitor expectations and projected future demand; and the sites are sustainable within existing budget and staffing capabilities.

Outcomes of the RFA process include a Forest niche and a proposed five year program of work. The program of work is not a decision, but rather a strategy for addressing the three primary objectives of the facilities analysis:

Provide recreation opportunities compatible with the Forest niche.
Operate and maintain recreation sites to meet national quality standards.
Eliminate or reduce recreation site backlog maintenance.

Over its five year life, the program of work may adapt and change depending on circumstances.

Draft Niche and Draft 5-Year Program of Work

The Draft Niche and Draft 5-Year Program of Work for developed recreation sites are available for review and comment. To be most helpful, comments should be submitted in writing through email or surface mail by June 16, 2008, but comments will be accepted at any time. If you would like, you may use the response form below to submit comments.

Thank you for your interest and assistance in this important forest effort.
