Winter Travel Conditions- ENJOY THE FOREST and BE PREPARED
If you plan on travelling Forest roads during the winter and early
spring time, it pays to be prepared for the unexpected.
- Check the weather and road conditions before you leave.
- Let others know where you are going, what route you will take
and when you will return.
- Take along sufficient emergency provisions for conditions which
may vary from cold overcast days to severe snowstorms.
- Pack enough emergency provisions: water, food, extra warm &
waterproof clothes, blankets/sleeping bags, flashlight, cell phone/2-way
radio with spare batteries, and water-proof matches/lighter for
several days.
- Cell phone coverage on the forest is very limited so do not rely
on it while travelling in the backcountry.
- Carry tire chains, a shovel, flares and a tarp.
- Road conditions change often this time of year; frozen surfaces
in early morning , muddy and soft surfaces in warm spots, or additional
snow later after a storm.
- If the road looks like it has not been traveled for quite awhile,
or surface is muddy or wet - use good judgment and choose another
safer route.
- Drive defensively and within the conditions of the road.
- Check the District Recreation Reports for the "Vehicle Access
and Snowplow Activity" or call the Ranger District to get the
latest road condition report.
