It is difficult to describe the average weather to expect on New Years
Day. High temperatures have ranged from the lower 80s to sub-freezing. Low
temperatures across southeast Texas have varied from the teens to the upper
60s. Low temperatures in the College Station area fall below freezing about
once every four years with the last occurrence 1991. The Houston area low
temperatures will fall to or below freezing about once every five years and
the last occurrence was also in 1991. Father time ought to carry an
umbrella as rain occurs rather frequently... roughly twice every five years
in the Houston/Galveston areas and once every three years in the College
Station area. The College Station area endured an ice storm on New Years Day
in 1979. Snow was mixed with the freezing rain toward the end of the day and
the 1979 holiday remains the only New Years Day with snow reported. The
following charts will show the five warmest... coldest and wettest New Years
Days for Houston...Galveston and College Station.
