Drummond WoodsForest: Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest District: Washburn Description: Enter nature's own cathedral: old growth hardwoods, towering hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) and majestic white pine ( Pinus strobus). This awe-inspiring area is interspersed with wetlands and a 3/4 mile section of interpretive trail, an opportunity to walk through a bygone era, with history both natural and human. The North Country Trail connects up with the interpretive trail and continues on. This trail is an easy hike. In spring, some early blooming flowers are in view trailside. You will see violets (Viola sp.), trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) and the humble bellwort (Uvularia sessilifolia). These beauties are interspersed with the ground cover, princess pine (Lycopodium sp.) As the trail meanders through some wet areas, you may spot a few clumps of blue flag iris (Iris versicolor) among the sedges. As the trail skirts a tamarack-black spruce swamp, the flora is unique to this acidic low area. Labrador tea (Ledum groenlandicum) and leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata) abound here, and if you may spot a few of the exquisite pink lady slippers (Cypripedium acaule). A quite exotic looking plant, the pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea) also loves this wet acidic soil. It is especially adapted to digest any insects trapped within its pitcher. Safety First: Appropriate clothing and footwear is a must for trail walking or exploring off trail in wetter areas. Be prepared for wet weather and insects. Bug spray is recommended. Directions: From Drummond, Wisconsin, drive northeast 1 mile on Hwy. 63 to Old 63. Turn left (west) and a parking area for the interpretive trail/North Country Trail is on the right side of Old 63.
