Au Train Songbird TrailForest: Hiawatha National Forest District: Munising Ranger District Description: The Hiawatha National Forest, within the Eastern Region, is home to many spectacular wildflower viewing opportunities. In the heart of the Hiawatha, within the Au Train Campground is the Au Train Songbird Interpretive Trail. During the spring and summer months of late May-August, the Au Train Songbird Trail treats visitors to spectacular flora displays as the fern laden trail winds through unique wetlands and geological features. There are ample recreational opportunities on site and in addition, an audio tape is available for use while walking the trail. The tape provides the visitor with songbird information as well as the calls of various songbirds such as the illusive Oven bird among many others. Directions: Au Train Campground is located on the west zone of the Hiawatha National Forest located in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is within 15 minutes of Munising Ranger District Office and Visitor Center located in Munising and 30 minutes from Marquette. Both communities are located along the southern shore of Lake Superior. Take M-28, which runs through the northern portion of the Upper Peninsula to either Munising or Marquette. If going into Munising, go west from Munising to Marquette to the small community of Au Train located along Lake Superior’s southern shore. At the village of Au Train turn south off M-28 to Alger County road H3. Travel approximately 4.5 miles south of M-28 to the H3 and FR 2276 intersection. Turn east on FR 2276 and follow the signs into Au Train Campground. Parking for the Au Train Songbird trail is available within the campground, however parking space is limited.
