Bird Ridge via the "Bird Flew Route"

Host Organization: Chugach National Forest

Event Location: Bird Ridge, just east of Anchorage.

Event Date: Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Event Time: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Make reservations by (date) June 24, 2009.

We will meet at 9:00 am at the Deli area inside of Carrs Huffman (1501 Huffman Road, Anchorage).

We will carpool the 20 miles to the Bird Ridge Trailhead on the Seward Highway.

Event Description: We will hike via trail and bushwhack through a wide diversity of forests and shrubland, botanizing along the way. Beginning on a boardwalk trail in spruce-hemlock forest, we soon diverge onto less trodden paths leading to a waterfall overlook. From there a steep bushwhack and scramble climbs about 3,500 feet vertical to the ridge. This spectacular loop route will end with a descent of the Bird Ridge Trail.

Level of Difficulty: Hard, rock scrambling. Minimum Age: 12.

Special Instructions: Bring your own lunch and be prepared for inclement weather and rugged off trail walking and scrambling. If you have a hand lens and field guides to assist in plant identification, please bring them.
