USGS Statewide Observation Well Network in Pennsylvania
In 1931, as a result of interest in ground-water declines caused by the drought
of 1930, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) established a statewide network of
wells to monitor water-level fluctuations. Today, this network consists of 68
wells operated by USGS in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental
Protection, Bureau of Watershed Conservation. The primary purpose of the observation-well
network is to monitor ground-water conditions during droughts. Water-level data
from the wells are one piece of information used by the Pennsylvania Emergency
Management Council when categorizing counties for a drought-watch, drought-warning,
or drought-emergency declaration. Although the primary purpose of the network
is for drought monitoring, long-term records of ground-water fluctuations at some
wells also are useful for evaluating effects of development, changes in aquifer
storage, and aquifer hydraulic properties.
Water-level records from network wells were collected and reported by a variety
of digital and analog methods through January, 2002 and the information was
summarized on a monthly basis in the water-level conditions reports listed below.
Because updates of ground-water conditions were needed more frequently than
a monthly basis, the instrumentation in all wells was upgraded in February 2002
to provide near-real time monitoring. Thus, summaries of monthly ground-water
conditions were discontinued at that time. Conditions are now updated and displayed
on a daily basis for each well in the statewide network on the following web
pages:
Requests for historical water-level records for these wells and questions or
comments about the network can be directed to Linda Zarr at (717) 730-6979 or

A summary report of monthly water-level conditions for each well in the network
can be accessed in the various formats listed below. Requests for historical
water-level records for these wells and questions or comments about the network
can be directed to
