Federal Career Intern Program

BACKGROUND

The Federal Career Intern Program (FCIP) is designed to facilitate the employment of exceptional individuals with diverse professional experiences, academic training and abilities and prepare them for careers which support our mission of public service. This program allows individuals to be appointed to a 2-year internship that provides formal training and developmental assignments as established by the Federal agency. Upon successful completion of the program, the interns may be eligible for non-competitive permanent placement within the agency.

REQUIREMENTS

Eligibility applies to the following categories:

  • Individuals who have diverse professional experiences, academic backgrounds, and/or relevant skills. The program is not restricted to students.
  • U.S. citizenship is required. However, case-by-case exceptions may be approved if the Immigration and Appropriations Act requirements are met.

CONVERSION TO COMPETITIVE SERVICE

Those employees who have successfully completed their internships and meet all qualifications, suitability and performance requirements, may be granted permanent placement and converted to competitive service within the agency. Conversions will be effective on the date the 2-year service requirement is met. After conversion, employees will not be required to serve a probationary period and their service under the FCIP appointments will count toward career tenure.
