Frequently Asked Questions
OHV Use
- Where can I ride my OHV? There are many trails
in the central Oregon area where you can ride your OHV. Our offices
have maps available of the various OHV areas. Please contact them.
OHVs are restricted to trails unless they are street legal. Street
legal mean they have proper equipment to ride them on any major
highway (97 or 20). The state of Oregon considers our forest roads
the same as a major highway.
- What can I ride? The trails are open to Class
1 and 3 ATV's (quads and motorcycles). They are closed to Jeeps,
pickups and Class 2 ATV's.
- What are the registration requirements?
- ATV's must display a current Class 1 Off-Road Operating
Permit.
- All motorcycles, including dual sports, must display a current
Class III Off-Road Operating Permit.
- OHV's from other states are allowed if they have current
ATV sticker from their state. Visitors from other states that
do not have ATV programs must purchase and Oregon Nonresident
Off-Road Operating Permit.
- What are the Equipment Requirements?
- All OHV's must be equipped with a Forest Service approved
spark arrestor from April 1 to October 31.
- Mufflers must meet the current DEQ noise standard of 99db
or less using the 20" test.
- Headlights and taillights are required during times of limited
visibility.
- All children under 18 must wear a helmet.
- Do I need a special license? For a Class
I and III ATV, the operator must have a valid driver's license,
a Class I or III operator permit, or be accompanied by a person
who is at least 18 years of age who has a license or permit. Children
under 7 cannot operate Class III ATV's (motorcycles). Your license
or permit should be carried with you while riding.
- What else do I need to know? It is unlawful
to operate an OHV under the influence of drugs or alcohol or in
a manner that endangers the safety of others.
