Law Enforcement Coordination Program
The primary function of the Law Enforcement Coordinator in the St. Louis Office of the United States Attorney is outreach to the community and law enforcement agencies of the district. In the spirit of this mission, this office has specified several priority areas:
Training - In the past year, the LECC has sponsored several training initiatives in the district. Of note was the Guns First Training, presented in partnership with the Missouri Police Chief’s Association. The LECC also is a participant in the annual Regional Police Executives' Training presented by the Community Relations Service of the Department of Justice. Of particular interest in the district this year was a 40-hour class sponsored by the LECC of the Eastern District of Missouri, the FBI, the U. S. Attorney of the Southern District of Illinois and the Anti-Defamation League. This group trained 40 police officers in the St. Louis Metro Area as a First Responder Team in the event of a serious hate crime. This training is being replicated in the Southern District of Illinois and is scheduled for Southeast Missouri early in 2002.
The LECC is in the process of arranging a Drug Task Force Supervisors' School early in 2002.
The LECC certifies training for the annual Mid-State OCDETF Conference, as well as for other federal agencies. This training is accredited by the Missouri Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. The Office also provides speakers for community service organizations, panels, forums and seminars for local law enforcement training. Those agencies that need trainers, or are able to provide training or have ideas regarding training are encouraged to contact the LECC.
Outreach - The LECC sits on several committees and task forces in an effort to provide communication and outreach to the law enforcement community. Examples of some of the agencies that the U. S. Attorney’s Office connects with via the LECC are: The U. S. Attorney’s Hate Crimes Task Force Subcommittee on Training, Project Safe Neighborhood, Weed & Seed, the St. Louis Area Police Chief’s Association, the Jefferson County Law Enforcement Board of Governors and the Missouri Police Chief’s Association.
Liaison - The LECC is often the conduit of information to and from the federal law enforcement community to state and municipal law enforcement. Agencies that are unsure of where to find assistance in the federal system are encouraged to contact the Law Enforcement Coordinator.
