Wanted: Student interested in working with the Marine
Mammals Management Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)
on the Sea Otter Biosampling program 1-3 days a week for college credit
(2 credits per days worked per week, to 6 credits maximum in BIO 498)
Duties: Intern will assist the biosampling program
by conducting necropsies and tissue subsampling on sea otters collected
by native subsistence hunters and through stranding events. Intern will
also maintain / update the biosampling database as necessary. Intern
can participate in USFWS staff meetings and learn about a career in
biology with the federal government, as well as interact with staff
members from the Alaska Sea Otter and Steller Sea Lion Commission. Intern
will meet weekly with the UAA advisor to review progress towards the
independent research project.
Requirements: The intern must be self-motivated, organized,
and pay close attention to detail. Once familiar with the database and
duties, the intern will develop an independent research project to be
carried out while working as an intern. This project will be developed
jointly with UAA and USFWS staff, and result in a final paper / report
at the end of the semester. Completion of the report is required before
UAA credit is earned.
Salary: This is a volunteer position. However, USFWS
may pay tuition costs. Days and hours to be worked can be negotiated;
however, students should be able to work full days.
Start Dates: Available immediately, position ongoing
all 3 semesters.
