Fulbright New Century Scholars to Study "The University As Innovation Driver and Knowledge Center"

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the selection of 36 leading scholars from the United States and 22 other countries to participate in the 2009-2010 Fulbright New Century Scholars (NCS) Program. This year’s topic is “The University as Innovation Driver and Knowledge Center.”

Now in its sixth year, the Fulbright New Century Scholars Program provides a platform for a group of outstanding scholars to focus on a single issue of concern to people, institutions and governments worldwide. NCS Program applicants are reviewed by a distinguished peer panel before being selected by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. After selection, these scholars – one-third from the United States, the rest from other countries – spend a year conducting research, both individually and collaboratively, to advance understanding on a topic of international importance in the 21^st century.

For 2009-2010, scholars will pursue individual research projects in the United States and partner countries, focusing on equipping universities for meaningful roles in innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic capacity-building. They will come together three times during the program year, twice in the Washington, D.C. area and once in Berlin, Germany, to collaborate and compare research on how universities can develop and expand their roles in generating solutions to global challenges, advancing economic and community development, and improving quality of life for societies.
