Lost River Subwatershed Project

Public comment period ends May 27, 2009

A public workshop will be held on Thursday May 14, 2009, from 4 pm through 7 pm at the Baker-Mathias Fire Hall at Mathias, WV. The fire hall is located just north of Mathias along State Route 259 about 13 miles south of Baker. Those attending will have the opportunity to inquire about the affects of the proposed project and to provide comments pertaining to the evaluation of the proposed action. The goals of the workshop will be to solicit agency and public comments regarding the environmental, economic and social affects of the proposed project as discussed in the DEIS.

New Organics Initiative Funding Announced

“The objective of this initiative is to make organic food producers eligible to compete for EQIP financial assistance,” said Kevin Wickey, West Virginia State Conservationist.

The 2009 Organic Initiative is a nationwide special initiative to provide financial assistance to National Organic Program (NOP) certified organic producers as well as producers in the process of transitioning to organic production. Organic producers may also apply for assistance under general EQIP.

Applications received from organic producers or producers in transition to organic farming will be accepted under this initiative between May 11 and May 29, 2009. Applications will be ranked at that time. This is an extension of the May 15, 2009, deadline announced earlier. Applications received after May 29, 2009, will be accepted, but they will not be evaluated until the next ranking period.

New Conservation Initiative Benefits Farmers and the Chesapeake Bay

West Virginia’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay watershed is the land that drains into the Potomac River and its tributaries and a small area that drains into the James River. Like all of the Bay States, West Virginia has been actively involved in pollution reduction programs for over twenty years.
