USDA Announces First Sign-Up for New Conservation Stewardship Program

Producers Advised to Apply for New Conservation Stewardship Program by September 30

Oregon’s agricultural producers and operators of non-industrial private forests are urged to apply for the Conservation Stewardship Program before September 30 to be considered for this year’s funding. This is the first signup for the newly authorized program under the 2008 Farm Bill. Through the voluntary Conservation Stewardship Program, producers have the opportunity to receive conservation payments through the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

AWEP Projects in Oregon Announced

USDA Directs $3.6 Million for Water Quality, Quantity in Oregon

U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief Dave White today announced nearly $58 million for water conservation and water quality improvements on agricultural working lands, including $3.6 million directed to Oregon projects, through the Agricultural Water Enhancement Program (AWEP). The eight Oregon projects are among 63 AWEP proposals funded in 21 States.

Secretary Vilsack Announces Conservation Innovation Grants: Two Oregon Projects to Receive Funding

Portland, Oregon, July 13, 2009—Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced $18.4 million in Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) to fund 55 projects in 34 states and the Caribbean Area. The purpose of the grants is to develop and refine cutting-edge technologies and approaches that will help farmers conserve and sustain natural resources on their operations.

The Baker County Grassbank is one of two Oregon-based CIG projects selected for funding nationally. The project, led by the Burnt River Soil and Water Conservation District, will direct $171,939 to establish a self-sustaining pilot grassbank that will not only protect natural resources and ecological functions, but also help the community maintain the local ranching economy and traditions.

In addition, the Xerces Society, a nonprofit working to advance invertebrate conservation, will direct $255,312 to develop specifications for creating needed pollinator habitat on working lands.

Vilsack Announces Floodplain Easement Selections Through Recovery Act Funding -- $3 Million Directed to Oregon Projects

PORTLAND, OR, June 4, 2009 –Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced funding for the first national sign-up for floodplain easements under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. Nationally, easements on 289 sites will cover more the 36,000 acres of land in 36 states, including three easements on 677 acres in Oregon.
