Background: Regardless of their size, onsite wastewater treatment systems that discharge directly (via pipe) or indirectly (via ditches, swales, tiles, etc.) to surface waters such as lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and coastal waters are required to have permit coverage under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, as authorized under Section 402 of the Clean Water Act.
US EPA is hosting this conference to ensure that they are installed and operated in a manner that protects public health, minimizes environmental impacts, and complies with applicable law.
This conference will examine
- Statutes and Regulations covering small discharging wastewater systems
- NPDES General Permits covering small discharging wastewater systems
- Advanced Soil-based Disposal Options
- Successful Programs that have Minimized or Prohibited Surface Discharging Onsite Treatment Systems
