Science that makes a difference.

The Pacific Southwest Research Station is a world leader in natural resources research through our scientific excellence and responsiveness to the needs of current and future generations.

We represent the research and development branch of the USDA Forest Service in the states of California and Hawaii and the U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands. Our primary work occurs in California (the most populous state with the fifth largest economy in the world) and Hawaii (a strategic location in the Pacific Rim economies and tourism). Our mission is to Develop and communicate science needed to sustain forest ecosystems and their benefits to society.

Origins of wolverine in California genetically verified Study provides first evidence of connection between Rocky, Sierra Nevada Mountain populations - A wolverine first photographed by a remote-controlled camera on the Tahoe National Forest in February 2008 is most closely related to Rocky Mountain populations, according to a team of 10 federal, state and university scientists. Native Hawaiian Forest, photo by Jack Jeffrey, US Fish and Wildlife Service "Biological Control of Strawberry Guava in Hawaii" Web Site Now Online - PSW Research Station's Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry launched a new online resource to provide information about strawberry guava and the threat it poses to native Hawaiian forests. The site also discusses the institute's proposal to manage the invasive tree using biological control. To learn more, browse the Biological Control of Strawberry Guava in Hawaii Web site.

The PSW Center for Urban Forest Research's (CUFR) Tree Carbon Calculator (CTCC) for California climate regions is now available. It's free, easy to use, and available to everyone -- from individuals curious about the amount of carbon stored in their front yard trees to municipalities, utilities, universities and other entities that are quantifying effects of greenhouse gas tree planting and stewardship projects.

The CTCC produces carbon storage and sequestration values for a tree (based on age or diameter-at-breast height) plus the associated energy conservation and emission reductions. To learn more or download this Excel application, visit the U.S. Forest Service's Climate Change Resource Center website. Learn more about urban forestry research by CUFR.

Fall 2008 issue of Science Perspectives - The article, Greener cities: U.S. Forest Service software package helps cities manage their urban treescape, features the work of researcher Greg McPerson and his team at PSW's Center for Urban Forest Research. Photo: Emerald BayTahoe Science: The round 9 request for proposals has been issued. It opened on September 2, 2008 and closes October 23, 2008 at 4:30 P.M., Pacific time. Proposals must be complete and follow the formatting requirements set forth in the Request for Proposal. The Proposal Template is provided for your use. PSW and the TSC have issued a Science Update Report that describes all of the projects funded under the program as well as agency needs relative to the Round 9 subthemes.

Global Climate Change

Pacific Southwest Global Change - Learn about climate change research and related activities conducted by scientists at the PSW Research Station.

Pacific Southwest Research Station and Region 5 Sustainable Operations Survey Report - Read the results of our sustainable operations survey. Current participation in sustainable operations efforts and ideas for increasing success are presented. For more information contact Pat Winter pwinter@fs.fed.us.

Scientists talk about climate change in the West - Topics emphasize information of interest to wildland managers and others who want an understanding of the interaction among climate change, forests, wildfire, water supplies, fish and wildlife, and associated values, and the implications for wildland management.

PSW Station participates in MillionTreesLA initiative - The Pacific Southwest Research Station is pleased to be able to provide a simple tree selection tool to assist the City of Los Angeles in meeting their goal to plant a million trees. See how to pick a one-in-a-million tree! at our Center for Urban Forestry area. Also visit http://www.milliontreesla.org to learn more about the effort.

Introducing CALFED - A product that was developed by the Pacific Southwest Research Station, in cooperation with the Lassen National Forest, to introduce the CALFED watershed improvement program on the Lassen National Forest. The analysis and restoration program was initiated to expand and accelerate the Forest's efforts to protect and improve habitat for some of the last naturally reproducing populations of steelhead and spring-run Chinook salmon in the Sacramento River system. The program includes work in five watersheds, Antelope, Battle, Butte, Deer and Mill Creeks, all tributary to the Sacramento River. Check it out in our Water area under Research Topics - CALFED.
