About Us

[IMAGE]: Random ImageRare plants and communities are a unique aspect of the White Mountain National Forest. Two federally listed plants and 22 Regional Forester sensitive plants are located on the Forest. Robbins' cinquefoil, an alpine species found only in the White Mountains' Presidential Range, is currently listed as endangered. However, an outstanding partnership between the White Mountain National Forest, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Appalachian Mountain Club, and New England Wild Flower Society to protect existing sites from hiker traffic and development of an effective transplant program has led to the proposed delisting of the species. Continued monitoring of the two populations will be necessary for some time to assure they are truly established.

HISTORY
The White Mountain National Forest was established by Presidential proclamation on May 16, 1918. As with most National Forests in the Eastern United States, it owes its existence to the passage of the Weeks Act in 1911 which enabled the federal government to purchase private land and establish National Forests principally in the Eastern United States.
