White Mountain National Forest Receives American Recovery & Reinvestment Act Funding
The White
MountainNational Forest
has received funding under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Forest Supervisor Tom Wagner announced economic recovery funding for a
two-year, $100,000 trail maintenance project has been awarded to the Forest to address resource damage resulting from erosion
and sedimentation. Work will be conducted in Coos, Grafton, and Carroll
counties, and will be carried out by several of the Forest’s partners: the
Appalachian Mountain Club, Randolph Mountain Club, Wonalancet Outdoor Club,
Dartmouth Outing Club, and the Rey Center. The partners will hire local workers
to reconstruct portions of heavily used trails on extraordinarily steep and
rocky terrain.
"Economic recovery funding will allow us to continue to
provide safe and memorable recreation experiences to White Mountain National
Forest visitors," said Wagner. "We are committed
to implementing projects that provide needed employment and will benefit the Forest into the future."
Nationally, the Forest Service has initially funded 32
projects in 18 states, and in the coming weeks additional projects valued at
$1.052 billion will be funded across the country. The White Mountain National
Forest has submitted additional project proposals
for consideration in the remaining funding to provide more employment opportunities.
The agency estimates its projects will create approximately 23,500 additional
jobs nationwide.
