US Fish & Wildlife Service - Journal Entry KENAI: Ski Trails Expanded Region 7, February 14, 2005 With nearly a foot of new snow last week Kenai National Wildlife Refuge was able to groom all of its expanded cross-country ski trail system located near the headquarters building just outside of Soldotna. With approximately one mile of new trails for 2005, re-routing completed late last year for better access and safety, and the recent snowfall, skiing has never been better at the Refuge. The new routes have been discovered too with approximately 50 percent more use this winter than last. Presently almost 3 miles of groomed trails are maintained to the north of the visitor center and approximately 5 miles of trails to the south. The trails are best suited for classic Nordic style skiing while Headquarters Lake, also being groomed over the ice this year, is suitable for skate skiing as well. Winter visitors may also use snow shoes on the trails and are often greeted with a sighting of moose, snowshoe hare, bald eagle or other wildlife during their outing.
