Final Rule to Implement Amendment 30B to the FMP for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico
This rule establishes an incidental bycatch allowance trip limit for commercial gag and red grouper and reduces the commercial minimum size limit for red grouper from 20 inches to 18 inches total length to reduce bycatch.

Final Rule to Revise the Maximum Retainable Amounts of Groundfish in Gulf of Alaska Fisheries

Final Rule to Implement Squid, Mackerel, and Butterfish Measures
This rule, among other things, increases the incidental mackerel possession limit to minimize the potential for regulatory discarding of mackerel by the Atlantic herring fleet when mackerel and herring co-occur in teh Gulf of Maine during summer months.

Notice of Plan to Analyze Measures to Minimize Non-Chinook Salmon Bycatch in the Bering Sea
Comments must be submitted by March 23, 2009.

Comments Requested on New Antarctic Marine Conservation and Management Measures
These measures include restrictions for fishing gear to reduce bycatch. Comments must be submitted by March 16, 2009.

Proposed Rule to Change Alaska Groundfish Retention Regulations
This proposed rule would reduce discards and increase retention of groundfish species. Comments must be submitted by March 16, 2009.

Proposed Rule to Implement Amendment 30B to the FMP fo rthe Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico (November 2008)

The comment period for this rule ends on January 2, 2009.

Final Rule to Revise the List of Allowable Bycatch Reduction Devices (BRDs) for the Southeastern Shrimp Fishery (November 2008)
This rule decertifies the expanded mesh BRD, the "Gulf fisheye" BRD, and the "fisheye" BRD, as currently specified for use in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery. This rule also certifies a new specification for the fisheye device to be used in the Gulf of Mexico. The purpose of this rule is to further reduce total finfish bycatch in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery. This rule is effective May 18, 2009.

NOAA Fisheries Changes Name of Approved Trawl Gear to Honor Captain Phil Ruhle, Sr. (October 2008)
NOAA Fisheries has changed the name of a previously approved trawl gear designed to reduce bycatch, referred to as the "Haddock Rope trawl," to the "Ruhle Trawl," to recognize the efforts of Captain Phil Ruhle, Sr., who was instrumental in the development of this gear.

Approval of Amendment 72 to the Fishery Management Plan for Groundfish of the Gulf of Alaska (9/08/08)
This amendment amends the fishery management plan to state that the North Pacific Fishery Management Council will annually review information on the discard of shallow-water flatfish in Gulf of Alaska groundfish fisheries.

Final Rule to Implement Amendment 89 to the Fishery Management Plan for Groundfish of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Managment Area (9/08/08)
This amendment prohibits nonpelagic trawling in certain waters of the Bering Sea subarea to protect bottom habitat from the potential adverse effects of nonpelagic trawling.
