Description:
Over 20 million pages, some currently on microfiche. There is an
ongoing program to scan paper and microfiche documents to create an
Electronic Reading Room (with NHTSA Contract Reports linked to the
TRIS Online Database in the near future). Also there are the public
files of NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation, Office of Vehicle
Safety Compliance, Crash Tests, NHTSA Dockets and Rulemaking (with the
most recent files on DOT’s Docket Management System, which is
accessible through http://www.regulations.gov).
Subject Strengths:
Documents included in Highway Safety Literature since 1967 (with
selected entries back to the 1950’s); summaries of technical service
bulletins from 1998 to present on website (due to copyright), requests
for full-text need to be made in writing and will be filled by
providing a single copy under the “fair use” guidelines of the
Copyright Law (Title 17, United States Code, Section 107).
Hours: 9:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday
Open to the Public: Yes
Any Conditions: Requests for searches and any other
services must be made in writing (mail, e-mail, and FAX are the
current options).
Interlibrary Loan Policies: No current interlibrary
loan. However, we attempt to meet the needs of other DOT Offices by
copying documents, if at all possible. All other documents, which are
available from the National Technical Information Service, will be
referred to them, until they become available through the Electronic
Reading Room.
Photocopy Fees: $$0.10 per page for paper documents or
per page for microfiche blowbacks.
Service Fees: For commercial requests, the labor charge
is regulated by the current issue of Title 49, CODE OF FEDERAL
REGULATIONS, Part 7 et al., and are now $48.00 (subject to change in
2009 and future years).
