Agripedia
is an Internet Accessible Interactive Multimedia Instructional
Resource, developed by the University of Kentucky's College of
Agriculture created with a USDA Higher Education Program Grant.
(Find out more about the USDA Higher Education
Program Grant)
Agripedia
has been created to allow students to use resources across the
country in an integrated, interactive learning resource on the
Internet. As an "encyclopedia of agriculture", Agripedia
presents facts, figures, demonstrations, examples, graphics,
and more regarding the concepts, practices, and vocabulary of
agriculture in a multimedia format using audio clips, graphics,
text and animation.
AGRIPEDIA
not only provides ready access to instructional sites on the
web, it also helps students navigate the tangle of the world
wide web with ease.
Features
of Agripedia include:
- A "general
encyclopedia" of agricultural information with a glossary
of words and pictures and video to assist students in the
learning process;
- A centralized
location for access to other Internet agricultural web sites/links;
- A centralized
starting point for all web site-related class materials within
the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture.
Students
may use Agripedia to learn independently of classroom and time,
at their own pace. This tool is designed so that novice or expert
agricultural students have the ability to use a variety of learning
modes and information retrieval methods. It not only provides
the instructional material, but increases their abilities to
manipulate technology they will assuredly have to master in
their professional careers.
Agripedia
is an innovative application of emerging technologies being
used to meet some the challenges of education today. Many web-based
projects are class-specific, however, and do not accomplish
what Agripedia has - providing centralized, general agricultural
information to college and secondary school students as well
as the general public.
Although
it is designed to support on-site College and distance courses,
Agripedia serves as a tool for Extension clientele as well as
Kentucky's secondary and primary school students. As the state's
leadership pushes for use of advanced technologies in higher
education and for great access to information for all Kentuckians,
Agripedia is poised to meet those challenges today.
