KENAI: Ecologist Publishes on Spruce Bark Beetle and Area Fire History
Region 7, May 17, 2006
Dr. Edward Berg, an Ecologist with Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, recently published two definitive scientific works in the Forest Ecology and Management journal.  Dr. Berg was the lead author on articles entitled, "Spruce beetle outbreaks on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, and Kluane National  Park and Reserve, Yukon Territory:  Relationship to summer temperatures and regional difference in distrubance regimes" and "Fire history of white and Lutz spruce forests on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, over the last two millenia as determined from soil charcoal."  These papers summarize nearly a decade of investigations that have helped managers understand warming trends on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and relationships to forest insect infestation and fire on the Refuge.  The applied science helps direct managing for natural fire regimes with increased understanding of potential impacts to wildlife and people.
