Vaccinating millions in the Americas and Europe

In April 2009, two regions of the World Health Organization, the Americas and Europe, conducted Vaccination Weeks to vaccinate millions of children, adults, and seniors. The European Immunization Week (EIW) (exit) was held April 20-26 and the Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) (exit) was held April 25-May 2. A news story highlighted the two events (exit) on the WHO Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals website. For the first time, the EIW used innovative Internet-based viral techniques and social media to advocate for immunization across Europe. An animated video, posted on YouTube, spread the EIW message virally (online) as well as drove traffic to the EIW website. Social networking sites such as Facebook, BKontakte, and Studivz also were used to reinforce the message.
