Mortality Threats to Birds - Collisions
In recent years, the problem of bird strikes
with buildings, towers, wind turbines, and overhead powerlines
has become of increasing concern to conservationists. Hundreds
of millions of birds - mostly night-migrating songbirds -
die each year in collisions with such structures, including
many species on ABC/Audubon
WatchList. Lighting on these structures - both for the
purposes of aviation and decoration - appears to be a primary
causal factor, and efforts have been made to limit or change
lighting regimes to minimize the hazard.
American Bird Conservancy continues to be a leading force in ongoing efforts to protect birds from collisions, working with industry representatives, the federal government, and other conservation groups. Click on one of the pictures below for more information on specific threats to birds.
