Biogeographic Information and Observation System (BIOS)
BIOS is a system designed to enable the management, visualization, and analysis of biogeographic data collected by the Department of Fish and Game and its Partner Organizations. In addition, BIOS facilitates the sharing of those data within the BIOS community. BIOS integrates GIS, relational database management, and ESRI's ArcIMS technology to create a statewide, integrated information management tool that can be used on any computer with access to the Internet. http://cain.nbii.gov/portal/community/Communities/Geographic_Perspectives/California/Live_Maps_and_Data/ - OR - http://bios.dfg.ca.gov/

Butterflies and Moths of North America

Cactus Moth Detection and Monitoring Network
Concerned about the potential damage caused by the cactus moth, a partnership has been formed between federal agencies (USGS BRD, USDA APHIS), state agencies (states' Departments of Agriculture), universities (Mississippi State University) Cooperative Extension Service, and other interested groups to monitor the distribution of the cactus moth. This partnership developed the Cactus Moth Detection and Monitoring Network, composed of volunteer monitors from public and private land management units, garden clubs and Master Gardeners to monitor the spread of the moth. The program relies on volunteers to monitor cactus populations and report observations. This is the first step of an Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) approach. The data will be used to support modeling efforts to better predict likely locations for new pricklypear cactus and cactus moth, helping guide surveys.

Negative Cactus Locations
The CMDMN is storing several different types of information about pricklypear cactus and the cactus moth. Some of this information is provided graphically through a GIS application. The system displays the locations of pricklypear cacti with the moth sightings included. Negative reports are also being used for modeling purposes. In the effort to monitor the progress of the cactus moth, sentinel sites have been established along the leading edge. These sites are monitored on a regular basis for the presence of the cactus moth. http://www.gri.msstate.edu/research/cmdmn/

Children's Butterfly Site The Children's Butterfly Site is an educational opportunity for all ages. Investigate a butterfly's transformation during metamorphosis, browse images of species from across the globe, or print coloring book pages. Learn all about these magnificent creatures by reading answers to the extensive frequently asked questions. http://www.nbii.gov/portal/community/Communities/Geographic_Perspectives/Mountain_Prairie/Butterflies_and_Moths/ - OR- http://www.kidsbutterfly.org/

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (FAR) Data Access Wizard
The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (FAR) Data Access Wizard helps you discover and access fisheries-related data. Data can be searched using keywords, themes, geographic extent and data providers. Most of the available data is in a spatial, or GIS, format and can be accessed in a variety of ways:
Data can be directly downloaded as-is to your desktop computer.
Multiple datasets can be added to a 'data cart' to be downloaded simultaneously. Data in your data cart can also be clipped to a specific geographic area and re-projected on-the-fly prior to download.
Many datasets can also be viewed online via Web mapping applications or accessed dynamically by a desktop GIS client using ArcIMS or WMS MapServices. http://cegis2.cas.psu.edu/FAR/

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Early DetectionData System (HEDDS)
Provides a data repository into which partners from different organizations and agencies can voluntarily contribute their AI surveillance data. This data can then be rolled together and summarized for mapping and reports.

Capable of holding data from national and state agencies, universities, and other nongovernmental organizations. Data from tests conducted at the local level may not appear in HEDDS if the regional submitting agencies or organizations choose not to participate in the system.

Displays test results for H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), although not in real time. Test results are updated regularly as the data is made available to HEDDS by the contributing partners. Positive results will likely be revealed through the media and contributing agency press releases before appearing on HEDDS.

Assists scientists in evaluating surveillance activities and refining monitoring strategies should HPAI be detected in the United States. Allows researchers to share information on sampling locations, bird species sampled, and test results. See the Core Data Fields document for a full list of the data being collected. http://wildlifedisease.nbii.gov/ai/

Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis (IHN) Fish Virus Database This web site provides the ability to look at geographic distribution of genetic diversity in the IHN virus on maps. It also allows comparison by number of base pairs difference between isolates.
* Users can query specific virus-related disease data from each of the virus isolates and compare the associated biological, genetic, and spatial components.
* Results are displayed in tabular form and on an interactive map, both of which are highly customizable.
* A special feature allows users to compare viral genetic sequences from samples collected in disparate locations or at different times.

Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) …taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world http://www.itis.gov/

Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE)
The Invasive Plant Atlas of New England's (IPANE) mission is to create a comprehensive web-accessible database of invasive and potentially invasive plants in New England that will be continually updated by a network of professionals and trained volunteers. The database will facilitate education and research that will lead to a greater understanding of invasive plant ecology and support informed conservation management. An important focus of the project is the early detection of, and rapid response to, new invasions. http://nbii-nin.ciesin.columbia.edu/ipane/

Invasive Plant Atlas of the MidSouth (IPAMS)
A large number of invasive aquatic and terrestrial plant species have become introduced into the United States. While several agencies have developed databases for tracking the locations and status of these invaders, these agencies do not have the resources to thoroughly track the presence and locations of these species in the states, relying instead on voluntary reporting of locations.

An important component to a state and regional coordination of management efforts will be an accessible and up-to-date database of invasive species locations and actions to manage them, operated and managed at the regional level. GRI is actively mapping the locations of invasive aquatic and terrestrial plant species in the Midsouth, and entering them into our web-based database for invasive plant species.

This database will be developed in collaboration with national USGS and other agency databases and structures, and the Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE), with mechanisms and procedures in place to ensure data transmission both upward (nationally) and downward to the local level for rapid assessment and response. http://www.gri.msstate.edu/ipams/

Invasive Species Database

North American Breeding Bird Atlases
Breeding Bird Atlas (BBA) is a population survey project designed to cover large geographic areas using a grid based system and is generally organized at the state or provincial level. Each participant in the project, referred to as an observer or 'atlaser', is assigned one or more blocks (grid cells) in which to conduct extensive area searches. They record any breeding evidence observed for each bird species; this evidence is categorized as "confirmed", "probable" or "possible". The results can be mapped and will then provide comprehensive information about the distribution of breeding birds in the region covered. http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bba/index.cfm
