Developing Policies of Nondiscrimination

Overview

The starting point for prevention of civil rights concerns is the issuance of comprehensive policies prohibiting discrimination within all programs and activities. Such policies place staff students and the public on notice regarding expectations and also provide standards for taking actions when problems arise.

Comprehensive polices are needed but schools and colleges may also wish to issue specific policies addressing certain types of discrimination such as sexual harassment. Notices of nondiscrimination are required under most laws we enforce. We provide the links to the relevant regulations and a model notice. State agencies may also have specific civil rights notice requirements that must be complied with. Contact your state education agency for information regarding state notice requirements.
