    Employment

Attorney positions within the USAO are highly competitive. Most attorneys hired have distinguished academic credentials followed by several years of experience, although highly qualified recent graduates with some experience in practice or as a judicial clerk are also considered. California bar membership is an important factor in hiring decisions. Exceptional lawyers who are not members of the California bar are occasionally hired, but must take the next available California bar examination after their entry on duty and must become California bar members as quickly as possible. Attorneys undergo a full background investigation before entering on duty, and are expected to make a minimum three-year commitment to the USAO.

Attorneys seeking appointment as AUSAs should provide a cover letter with a resume, brief writing sample, and law school transcript. Please be sure to indicate preferred Division(s) and all jurisdictions in which admitted to practice law. AUSA applications are accepted throughout the year and should be directed to George Cardona, Chief Assistant United States Attorney, 1200 United States Courthouse, 312 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Interviews and hiring are conducted on a rolling basis as positions become available.

Applicants interested in the Riverside Office may also send a resume and cover letter to:
