The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), found at 5 U.S.C. 552 (link provided below), was enacted in 1966. The FOIA provides any person the right to request access to Federal agency records. All agencies of the Executive Branch of the United States government are required to provide records, upon receipt of a written request that reasonably describes the records, with the exception of information that is protected from disclosure by any of the nine exemptions and three exclusions of the FOIA.
