Most Forest Roads to Reopen on Mount Pinos Ranger District

The Forest Service announced that it expects to reopen forest roads in the Frazier Mountain and Grade Valley areas by Saturday, April 18, 2009. The roads have been closed since the beginning of winter due to snow and adverse road conditions. The roads that will reopen include Frazier Mountain road 8N04 and spurs, and Grade Valley road 7N03 and spurs.

According to District Ranger Tom Kuekes, other roads and trails in the Alamo Mountain area will remain closed until further notice.

"Thousands of trees were killed on Alamo Mountain in the Day Fire of 2006, and those trees present a hazard to travelers," Kuekes said. "We have received funding for a contract to fall dead trees along roadsides on Alamo Mountain, and we will reopen those roads and connecting trails after the work is complete."

The roads and trails that remain closed on Alamo Mountain include Alamo Mountain road 8N01 south of Piru Creek, Sewart Mountain road 6N10, Miller-Lockwood jeep trail 8N12, Snowy motorcycle trail 19W04, Piru Creek motorcycle trail 7N13/20W07, and Yellowjacket OHV trail 7N15.

Visitors are encouraged to contact the Mt. Pinos Ranger District with questions on current conditions by calling (661) 245-3731.
