    The Economic Outlook: Bernanke

    The Joint Economic Committee (JEC), chaired by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, held a hearing on the Economic Outlook for the United States with Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in Hart Senate Office Building, Room 216. Chairman Bernanke evaluated our current economic situation, as well as the longer term outlook, and provided insights into the ongoing government efforts to restore financial stability and promote economic recovery.

    HEARING ANNOUNCEMENT - Joint Economic Committee to Hold Hearing on April Jobs Report

    Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) will hold a hearing on the newly released employment figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Senator Amy Klobuchar (D- MN) will preside over the hearing entitled, “The Employment Situation: April 2009” on Friday, May 8, 2009 at 9:30 am in Dirksen Room 106. BLS commissioner Keith Hall will testify to recent developments in the labor market, as the JEC continues a series of hearings examining the causes and ongoing effects of the financial crisis and the economic downturn.

    The Economic Outlook: Romer

    The Joint Economic Committee (JEC), chaired by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, held a hearing on the Economic Outlook in the United States with Christina Romer, Chair of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers on Thursday, April 30th at 10:00 a.m. in room 210 of the Cannon House Office Building. Romer evaluated the longer term macroeconomic outlook and provided insight into how the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the financial stabilization plan, and housing reforms are likely to foster economic recovery and promote job creation.

    Equal Pay For Equal Work? New Evidence on the Persistence of the Gender Pay Gap

    The Joint Economic Committee (JEC), chaired by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, held a hearing entitled, “Equal Pay for Equal Work? New Evidence on the Persistence of the Gender Pay Gap,” on Tuesday April 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 2172 of the Rayburn House Office Building. On Equal Pay Day, the JEC focused on GAO’s newly released report examining the gender pay gap in the federal government. Experts discussed new evidence in light of continuing disparities between men’s and women’s pay, a fact that hits many families particularly hard during these tough economic times. Witnesses also commented on the need for additional federal action to combat the gender pay gap. This hearing continues Chair Maloney’s commitment to highlighting economic and work-life balance issues facing women.
