MAY 10,1869

Four spikes are driven into the ground—two of them golden—in Promontory, Utah, completing the first transcontinental railroad in America.

1924: J. Edgar Hoover becomes the nation’s top G-man when he is named director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He runs the FBI until his death in 1972.

1994: Four years after being released from prison, Nelson Mandela is sworn in as president of South Africa.

New transcontinental railroad is celebrated.
