History of the OIG
Who We Are
Congress created the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General in 1996 to be its eyes and ears to detect and prevent waste, fraud, abuse, and misconduct. The Inspector General concept in America, however, traces its origins back over 200 years to the father of the American post office (and its first Auditor), Benjamin Franklin.
