Advisory:
Loop Road is open for travel but is in poor condition. Those using the road should travel with care.

Closures:
Due to fire activities related to the Deep Fire the recreational access closure in Big Cypress National Preserve has been extended to include the northern area of the Deep Lake Unit. The closure now includes all areas north of, and including the Fire Prairie Trail.

Due to fire activity all recreational access into the Bear Island Unit of the Preserve is closed until further notice.

Beginning Monday March 23, 2009 Zone 4 airboat access will be closed due to low water conditions. This will begin the 60 day recreational off-road vehicle (ORV) closure for this area. Pending water levels, this area will re-open to ORV access by airboats on Friday, May 22, 2009.

Beginning on Monday, June 1, 2009 all other areas that allow ORV access will be closed for 60 days with access being re-opened on Friday, July 31, 2009. For more information click here.

The Burns and Monument Lake Campgrounds are closed through late August. For more information on other campgrounds within the Preserve click here.

A portion of the Cypress Camp Trail in the Bear Island Unit is closed until further notice. For more details click here.

Fire Activities
"Deep Fire" - As of 4/22 there is a large lightning caused fire burning in the Bear Island Unit and the Deep Lake Unit of the Preserve.

Big Cypress National Preserve has one of the largest fire programs within the National Park Service. The peak of the fire activity within the Preserve typically occurs from November through May. Prescribed and wild fires may often close facilities within the Preserve. To discover if there are any recent closures due to fire click here.

Did You Know?
The anhinga is a commonly seen bird in many areas of Big Cypress National Preserve, and other park areas in Florida. However, within the United States of America, the bird is never really seen beyond Florida. Anhingas cousins are more commonly seen in South America and Africa.
