TETLIN: LocalBird Festival a "Recycled" Success
Alaska Region, May 17, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Saturday, May 17 brought a cool but sunny dawn - a perfect day for gathering in the park and celebrating the return of our feathered friends.  The festivities began with a bird tour (taking folks to local birding "hot spots,") followed by a bird banding demonstration at Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge headquarters.  Then, at the Tok Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, over 120 folks gathered to hear their kids and the neighbors’ kids share, through music, their ideas and convictions on this year’s theme of reducing/reusing/recycling.  The program included such "award winners" as "We've Been Working On Recycling" (to the tune "I've Been Working on the Railroad") and a recycling rendition of Queen's famous "We Will Rock You." ("We want you to recycle!"  Try it out - it actually works.)  All local entries to the Junior Duck Stamp contest were displayed and awards presented.  Finalists from our local "Young Naturalist" contest were judged on their presentations and costumes.  The program was followed by a demonstration by local taxidermist, Frank Entsminger.  Then the festivities moved to the park for lunch, games, and activities.  A Bird Treasure Quest, canvas shopping bags, feather masks, recycled crochet, and the Wheel of Birds were only some of the activities offered.  The Blue Goose made an appearance too, and even danced to the Migration Reel! By day’s end, over 140 participants made the annual festival a roaring success!
