KENAI: Youth Hunt Provides Food for Thought
Alaska Region, December 4, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Kenai Alternative High School students recently got 400 pounds of practical Alaska knowledge while earning their moose meat dinners as they participated in an educational moose hunt on Kenai Refuge with volunteers from Safari Club International and biologists from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.  The annual outing began with a lesson in firearms safety and hunter education followed by field discussions of moose management.  After a moose was harvested the program became a hands-on biology lesson as the meat is processed.  Finally, participants help with the cutting and wrapping of moose meat which they keep.  Volunteers from 4-H and butchers from Safeway and IGA stores turned the moose meat into steaks, roasts, and hamburgers.  A new freezer was even donated to the school to store moose meat for kids who can’t do it at home.  The educational moose hunt started more than 10 years ago and continues annually.
