AK PENINSULA: Refuge Honored for Recycling Program
Alaska Region, May 15, 2007
Print Friendly Version
The Alaska Peninsula and Becharof National Wildlife Refuges were selected as the "Refuge of the Year" and were recognized with the Environmental Leadership Award. The refuges received the honor for their recycling and waste/pollution reduction programs. In an effort to reduce pollution and waste, the refuges have been replacing many cleansers, solvents and chemicals with more environmentally friendly materials. In addition, the refuges initiated a community-wide aluminum recycling program in partnership with Alaskans for Litter Prevention & Recycling (ALPAR). Prior to this effort, no organized recycling program existed. Over 300 pounds of aluminum were shipped into Anchorage for recycling during the month of May.
