Community posters and newspaper ads invited the public to Kenai National Wildlife Refuge's Family Fun Day.

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge celebrated National Wildlife Refuge Week with a Family Fun Day at their headquarters near Soldotna on September 30.  The day came following the first hard freeze of the season but included brilliant blue skies as a backdrop to the glorious yellow and red leaves of autumn.  Over 100 families participated in the celebration which included guided nature walks, family activities, prizes, and snacks and hot drinks.  The multiple 30 minute nature walks were the highlight of the day's events with a focus on local plant and berry identification along the 1/4 mile hike.  Many of the over 500 National Wildlife Refuges thoughout the Nation celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week in a variety of fashions.  The designation is formally recognized as the second week of October each year.  Kenai frequently celebrates early in hopes of better weather for outside activities.  The weather for the 2006 celebration once again proved perfect!
