ANCHORAGE: Poster Presentation Leads to New Partnerships
Alaska Region, April 1, 2006
Print Friendly Version
In late March, the 1st Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference of the International Association of Wildland Fire was held in Portland, Oregon.   Karen Murphy, Region 7 regional fire ecologist, and Joel Reynolds, Region 7 regional refuge biometrician, presented a poster entitled “Applying National Burn Severity Mapping Methodology to National Wildlife Refuge Lands in Alaska:  Will dNBR work?”  The poster described the preliminary analysis of burn severity data collected on five refuges during the summer of 2005.  Surprisingly, the preliminary results did not demonstrate the expected correlation between satellite-based and ground-based burn severity indices.  Nor were errors in the data collection or analysis the source of the odd results.  The authors, while presenting some possible explanations currently under investigation, were hopeful that the poster would generate suggestions from the conference participants.  Success!  The poster generated great interest, including the attention of conference participants from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) who are using the same satellite-based data to map burn severity for all U.S. fires greater than 1,000 acres. The USGS researchers are now exploring improvements to the satellite-based methods for the fires on Refuge lands in Alaska.  We’ve also agreed to share results of future analyses as we explore possible ecological explanations for why the satellite data didn’t strongly represent what we see on the ground.  Possible factors include vegetation type, wetness, or permafrost.
