ANCHORAGE: Alaska Burn Severity Working Group Formed
Alaska Region, March 31, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Agency scientists and University researchers recently met to share data on and discuss approaches to estimating burn severity on Alaska fires.  The February meeting was a follow-up to an effort in early 2005 to coordinate data collection among the various groups to encourage data sharing and collaborative analysis.  The National Wildlife Refuge System (US Fish and Wildlife Service), National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management were joined by researchers from six universities with fire science projects funded through the Joint Fire Science Program, NASA, and the National Science Foundation.  Preliminary analyses of the 2005 fire season data initiated an important discussion concerning the effectiveness of both the National Burn Severity Mapping Program’s satellite-derived burn severity index and the composite burn index used to verify burn severity on the ground.  A working group was formed to encourage collaboration and pursue effective remote sensing methods for estimating burn severity of fires in Alaska.
