Journal Entry   Back TETLIN: Kids Migrate to Bird Banding Station Alaska Region, September 23, 2005 Print Friendly Version During the past 13 years, hundreds of students from kindergarten through college visit the Tetlin Refuge bird banding station each fall. Since 1993, the Refuge banded over 30,000 passerines during fall migration. The goal is to monitor population dynamics and learn more about the timing of life history events of landbird migrants that breed in Alaska. This project is in cooperation with the Alaska Bird Observatory and other stations in Alaska and the Yukon. Visiting students watched Refuge biologists remove birds from nets, record biological information, and then helped release newly banded birds. This project continues to be an excellent part of the Refuge's community outreach effort, which recently came full circle - parents who had visited the station when they were young are now accompanying their own children to share in this unique experience!
